Row Gossip – Mid-August Edition

Welcome to another edition of Row Gossip, where we serve you vegetables with all the dirt 🌱😉
Pull up a seat and peek through the leaves with vegetables, whispers, and a little field mischief 🍅🥕🧅

The last seeds are officially in for everything. Depending on the expected frost date, we count backward to determine when to sow the final seeds

Some crops, such as fall vegetables or tomatoes, get a few plantings early on; others, like corn, squash, and pickles, are staggered weekly or biweekly to ensure a steady harvest — and to dodge unseemly events, like weather or critters

Fall crops 🎃are doing well, spreading like they own the place. They know their time is near… but apparently, they do not know their place in the hierarchy. However, maybe they know more than what we give them credit for, they keep their weeds down quite efficiently.

The wheel is turning, even if the calendar refuses to admit it. Leaves are falling 🍂 quietly whispering as if trying to keep it a secret, dressed like they’re auditioning for a pumpkin spice commercial, despite the near-100-degree heat.

FALL SHARE  🍂🎃— Don’t sleep on this! Early sign-ups will expire. Summer share members get an extra discount. It’s the easiest decision you’ll make today. And yes, it is not easy to remember with so many summer vegetables. That’s why a friendly reminder.

It’s basically a VIP backstage pass to pumpkin-spice season 🎃, plus a sneak peek at the Carrot 🥕-Pumpkin gossip podcast.

Summer vegetables think they’re the headliners 🍅☀️, but the fall cast is already in costume rehearsals 🥬🥔. Tomatoes may still be hot gossip 🍅, but soup season is quietly stirring in the wings 🍲🍂.

Cabbages 🥬 are conspiring, and squash 🎃 is trying to keep up 🥬 “Cabbages plotting mischief”.

Carrots 🥕 are gorgeous… apparently, they’ve been gossiping with the pumpkins 🎃. Beets have joined in. Rumor has it that Fall crops are the influencers of the fields now. Oh mercy… watch out, lettuce  — your followers might be leaving

Watermelons 🍉 are selling fast. If you missed them, we can reserve one — just don’t ask it to smile for selfies. They love to crack a joke… mostly just crack… not funny. But that means they are ripe and delicious.

Cantaloupes 🍈 are mixed in size and secretly trying to imitate pumpkins 🎃. Some of the smaller pumpkins are taking notes. Social networking has infiltrated the fields; we politely declined the invite.

Winter Squash varieties 🎃 are throwing a party: Butternut, Acorn, Delicata, Pumpkin, Spaghetti — all vying for attention like reality TV stars.

Onions 🧅? Perfect. Money-back guarantee if they don’t make you cry. High-quality onions test your tear ducts, just to remind you who’s really in charge 🧅 “Onions judging”.

Lettuce 🥬 is taking a breather after the heat wave — again.

Beans 🫘 are taking a break too, plotting their return, and a few staggered plantings are striking at will 🫘 “Beans are scheming”.

Machinery Update:
“Something exploded… but don’t worry, just a tiller engine 🛠️💨.”

Gossip from the fields: the old tiller just blew its engine in very dramatic fashion, also blowing a hole in the tiller as if planing an escape  🛠️💨.
Even the corn 🌽 and squash 🎃 have stopped rustling for a moment, watching the drama unfold.
Rumor has it, it’s trying to outdo the tractor’s theatrics from earlier this season 🎭… and maybe with a miracle (and maybe a replacement engine this winter), it could rise again come spring. Big maybe.

The Farm truck also warned (again) that it's patience with us has just about come to an end. - Just a little longer we keep begging, and it tends to be agreeable - eventually -- "definitely the last time this time" it keeps grumbling as it makes all kinds of disagreeable noises, smoking and steaming... we'll see... It's a good truck that works really hard, and earned the right to be a little grumpy.

Mid-August is here. It is definitely Time to squirrel away a food stash 🐿️. Cooler weather is creeping in, and soon we’ll all be cozy, laughing at field scandals, mischievous vegetables, and maybe ourselves.

Bulk orders: now’s the time for best selection, ripened in fullest sunshine ☀️ (no kidding) — Corn 🌽, Tomatoes 🍅 (even Roma), Kale 🥬, Collards, Pickles 🥒, Squash 🎃.
(Rumor has it, we ran out of the proper boxes 📦, might have to use bigger ones for some things, to make due… pssst)

Green Tomatoes 🍏 chimed in … Relish? Fried? Canned to fry later? We’re available, too. — (I promised I would bring it up … equal rights for all, regardless of popularity. We’ll even make it the same price.)

Cooler weather will slow heat-loving crops 🌞, but slower does not mean gone -yet. Abundance is still available for bulk orders — until it is not. Don’t wait.

Collards 🥬? Frost-kissed or freezer-frozen ❄️ (it’s a hack) = sweet perfection. They may or may not giggle when you harvest them

Jalapeños 🌶️ are smoking! I Used one in a pot of tomato sauce 🍅 — no seeds, just one. Sinus-clearing, but not tear-inducing. Success. They’ve promised to behave… mostly. Rumors are, they’re trying to organize a spicy flash mob in the tomato patch 🍅.

🍆 Eggplants are teaching zucchinis 🥒 how to moonlight as nightshade rock stars.

Remember the Fall share 🍂 and Bulk Orders 📦 to fill your food stash — warm pumpkin-spice drinks ☕ and pies 🥧 await, yes, plural, because one is just not enough. Cooler weather is on its way, and soon we’ll all be cozy, laughing at the antics of the fields… and maybe at ourselves 🥕🎃🧅. But not for a while yet.
However, what we do now shapes the Future.

(Rumor has it, there is an extra bag of vegetables 🥕🥦 or fruit -as available-🍏🍐 as a cash discount.)

“Rumor also has it, something juicy is sprouting in the north row… but that’s a story for another whisper. Keep watching, keep laughing, and let the vegetables do the rest 🎃🥕.”

Until next time…
