 🍉🥕🌱 Row Gossip and happenings 🌿📜 🍅
(Week of August 6)

Word on the vine is… the Tomatoes 🍅 are talking.
Loudly.

There’s a bit of a kerfuffle down in the lower field where the reds, the almost-reds, and the not-yet-but-tryings are having heated debates about ripeness standards and accomplishments.

The fully blushed claim superiority (as they do every year), while the turning ones remind them that some people actually prefer a little more firmness in their sauce tomatoes, thank you very much.
Tomatoes are acting like theater kids: dramatic, attention-seeking, and convinced their ripeness deserves applause

Up to Five boxes packed to the brim are ready to move out —but whispers of a flash sale
are swirling through the leaves.

That sent the Romas into a mild panic. As the premier paste darlings, they’re used to high demand, but the season's been unpredictable and production might be... let’s say ... romantically limited. We hope they’re inspired to catch up.

Overheard by the compost bin:
“You can blame the weather,” said a sun-split heirloom, looking absolutely smug. “We all do.”

No one's really arguing. It’s been a relatively good year, with the absence of big challenges, weather-wise (knock on wood), but it’s a strange one, too.
Fall leaves in July? That’s not just your imagination. I’ve been cleaning them up for a while, pretending it’s not happening…
But the plants are reading the signs, and they’re not wasting time.

Carrots have been spotted plotting bad hair days again. If your bunch looks like it got in a fight with a garden gnome, just smile and slice—flavor remains impeccable. You’ve been warned.

However, the greens have found purpose too—made into pesto, soup stock, dried for later use. One lady shared that she transformed all the greens and scraps of CSA season into turkey basting—so good it left the guests speechless.

🍉Watermelon is making a shy debut. Sizes are unpredictable, but flavor is stage-ready. And yes, the rumor is true: if harvests allow, CSA members may each be gifted one per share, just like in the good ol’ melon-glorious days. For now, they are For Sale.

And Basil? Moody, fragrant, and slightly over it. We’re coaxing it along with flattery and trying to convince it to stay longer—because tomatoes. No promises.
Basil wants to be told it’s beautiful daily, or it’ll quit.

Meanwhile, in the legume lanes, the flat beans (green and yellow) are doing their annual synchronized stretch, practically begging to be picked.
There are still the regular green and wax beans too—that’s a lot of picking. We may get creative with variations in the bean offerings.

Daikon is poking out of the soil, gaining momentum. Spicy! Not too big yet, but very tasty…

And the Jalapeños, who were sulking until last week, decided the cooler weather needed spice—and that was enough to warrant a glorious entrance.

Off-stage but not forgotten
Available in bulk if you want to put some away for later:

  • Pickles are abundant—crisp and eager—but dill is very limited, so not every jar may be destined for tradition.

  • Cantaloupes are sweet-talking their way into smoothies and fancy frozen cubes. They’re at the height of their glory right now. Enjoy them—they’re the “quick in, quick out” type. Bulk means a Banana Box.

  • Corn is in a golden mood. We’re still struggling with the birds—if you want some for the freezer, don’t wait too long. We have more patches coming in, but already lost the fight over one -they already have challenged another…

  • Kale and Collards are holding steady—mature and unbothered by tomato drama. They know their time will come, closer to Thanksgiving.
Last year, we ran out of collards. Bugs got in, and it was over. There are never any guarantees—and what’s in the freezer, you know you have… and you don’t have to do the work later.
